Post Script to "Stress"

I thought this tied in nicely to the sermon this past Sunday.

Back in 2009, I was at my 30th reunion at Bethel.  One of my classmates shared this devotional.  As he approached the podium, he seemed to struggle a bit.  I leaned over to the person on my left and asked what was up with Dean.  He whispered back that he had MS.  So, with that background, read what Dean said:

In good times, as well as bad times, God calls on us to rely on him in every way—that is, to walk by faith and not by sight.  He provides the blessings and health and laughter we enjoy in the pleasant days, and he also carries us through the dark valleys to help us grow deep in trust, humility and reliance upon him.

So when the hard times hit (economic tribulation, marital stress, or problems with your health) I urge you to hold on and cling to Jesus.  And, likewise, when prosperous times come, I urge you to continue to hold on and cling to Jesus—and don’t allow comfort and ease to be your god.

In Psalm 62, from a time when David faced some “downs” in his life, he testified:

“My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him.  He alone is my rock, and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will never be shaken.” (vs 1-2)
1. Don’t let trials distort your picture of God.  The Lord remains our “rock” and “fortress” and “refuge.”

“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;  My hope comes from him.  He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.  My salvation and my honor depend on God,           He is my mighty rock, my refuge.” (vs 5-7)
2. Don’t lose sight of the fact that the Lord alone is the source of our ultimate deliverance and rest.

“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. (vs 8)
3. Determine (praying for God’s help) to “trust in him at all times” and not just on sunny days.  Should hardship or “downs” come your way, plan NOW to keep holding on to the Father’s hand.

“Though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. (vs 10)
4. Don’t fall for the temptation to rely on your money or skills or work ethic or any other earthly benefit.

“You, O God, are strong. You, O Lord, are loving. (vs 11-12)
5. Don’t lose track of the exquisite balance of love and strength with the character of God.

So when circumstances are difficult, remember that the Father still loves you and still is able to work all things together for good.

“My soul finds rest in God alone. (Psalm 62:1)

I happened to find a great song that goes along with this - actually called Psalm 62.  It is sung by Aaron Keyes.  It's great song to close your eyes and pray along.  Enjoy!
