As much as I like the show though, there are two things that disturb me.
1) How much people desire to be an idol. They're devastated when they're sent packing.
2) How much these people become idols. It's way out of wack.
A few years ago, there was one contestant named Chris Sligh. Chris was a believer and he took some bruising from judge, Simon Cowell. That too, is interesting to see how people respond to the criticism of the judges. Sometimes the judge's comments are pretty harsh.
Since his American Idol days, Chris has continued on with his singing career and at one point wrote a song , which I think reflects on his American Idol experience. The song is titled, "Empty Me". To me, it seems to be a pretty solid expression of what we all go through in some shape or form. Reflect on these lyrics Chris penned which are the chorus to the song:
Empty me
Of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition
And the poison of my pride
And any foolish thing my heart holds to
Lord empty me of me
So I can be
Filled with You
Chris is not writing and singing about being less selfish and prideful. The point is to be more filled, more in awe of God. So, my thought as a new Lenten season approaches, is how can I during those 40 days, empty more of what Todd wants and fill me more with what God wants. More thoughts on that to come, I'm sure.
